‘Lady sharpshooters at your disposal’
In spring of 1898 the prospect of war with Spain was growing more likely. On April 5, 1898, Annie Oakley, a famous sharpshooter and member of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, wrote to President William McKinley offering her services. The president did not act upon Oakley’s offer when the war started later that month. She would make similar offer when World War I started almost 20 years later.
Hon Wm McKinley President
Dear Sir I for one feel confident that your good judgment will carry America safely through without war. But in case of such an event I am ready to place a company of fifty lady sharpshooters at your disposal. Every one of them will be an American and as they will furnish their own arms and ammunition will be little if any expense to the government.
